The Amsler Grid: An Age Related Macular Degeneration Test you can take at Home

Many people know that AMD is a condition that is the leading cause of blindness in the elderly and they wonder about taking an age related macular degeneration test in order to see if they have it or not. There is really no substitute for seeing an eye-care professional to get a correct diagnosis. Here we will talk about one famous age related macular degeneration test that you can do from your home.

The Amsler Grid

This age related macular degeneration test is one that is commonly used by people at home as a brief test to see if they might have AMD or not. This is basically a grid with straight lines that you can find online and print out onto a sheet of paper.

This age related macular degeneration test shows whether or not you may have AMD by the fact that if you are getting the disorder, the lines on the grid will not appear straight when you look at it a certain way. There is a specific way to take the test.

You sit in a well lit room and put the grid on the wall with the dot in the center of it at eye level. You measure 14 inches away from the wall and put tape on the floor so you know how far that is. You face the wall, heels on the tape, and put on your glasses that you normally wear to read a book. Then with this age related macular degeneration test, you look at the center of the grid and cover one of your eyes with a paper cup. You should be able to see all the corners of the grid with the eye that is open without any distortions or wavy lines. You then do it again with the other eye.

The Results of the Age Related Macular Degeneration Test

It should be noted that some people who do actually have AMD are still able to see the grid clearly, so if you have other signs like changing pigmentation of your eyes or deposits in them, you should still see a professional.

If you see the grid as looking blurry or with wavy lines when you look with either eye at the dot in the center of the age related macular degeneration test, you should write down which eye it is and tell a doctor. This test is useful, but only a more detailed age related macular degeneration test performed by an eye doctor will yield trustworthy results.

When you are considering the fact that your vision is beginning to change and you are wondering whether or not it is AMD, it is always good to do as much as you can to figure out the truth. There is nothing that can be done to cure the condition, but there are preventative measures that can be taken early on in order to keep it from getting worse. By engaging in an age related macular degeneration test that you can take from the comfort of your own home, you will at least be taking one more step in exploration to help prevention start early.
