Age related macular degeneration research has shown that there is really no actual cure for the problem. There are, however, a few forms of AMD treatments that have been shown to at least slow down its progress. We will look at some of those age related macular degeneration treatments here so you can further understand your options if you are diagnosed with this condition.

Treating Dry AMD

Age related macular degeneration treatments for the dry form are less extensive than those for the wet form. Most people have this dry form, which can sometimes progress into the wet form. Age related macular degeneration research has shown that at an advanced stage, there is no real treatment to prevent losing vision from AMD.

However, there are certain formulas of antioxidants and zinc that can reduce the risk of the age related macular degeneration reaching the advanced stage. The earlier you begin taking these, the better!

Treating Wet AMD

Wet age related macular degeneration treatments are more extensive. There are three main types including injections, photodynamic therapy and laser surgery. We will look at what each of these age related macular degeneration treatments entails.

Injections

If you are a person who is initially turned off by the idea of injections, it would still be worth it to give this treatment a chance. New forms of drugs are injected into the eye and have an effect on the substances in the body that are telling the blood vessels to grow. By working on these substances, this age related macular degeneration treatment is able to help the body stop making the extra blood vessels that are causing problems.

These injections are usually given monthly and the doctors take the time afterwards to look at your eyes and monitor the success. Not only does this age related macular degeneration treatment help slow down the progress of the disease, but it also may improve your vision.

Photodynamic Therapy

With this therapy that has been discovered through age related macular degeneration research, a drug is injected into your arm rather than your eye. It reaches your eye eventually and is meant to stick to the area where new blood vessels are being formed. The drug is activated by light, so a light is then shone into your eye for a little over a minute. The drug is then able to destroy the new blood vessels that are causing the problems! This age related macular degeneration treatment only takes about 20 minutes to complete and is mostly painless.

Laser Surgery

As you can guess with this age related macular degeneration treatment, laser is used to get rid of the new blood vessels. The only problem with this treatment is that it sometimes also damages surrounding tissue, which can further decrease your vision. Age related macular degeneration research has shown that not everyone can be eligible for this treatment and it is most effective if the new blood vessels have been forming away from the center of the macula.

The sad news is that there is no cure for AMD, but these treatments can help to slow the progress and even regain some eyesight in certain cases. Doing your research is one great step in finding your personal solutions because you can feel empowered by your knowledge. Age related macular degeneration treatments are being developed more thoroughly all the time and with the right amount of supplements and more aggressive methods, there can be hope for everyone’s eyes.
